What is DTF Printing?
A Complete Guide to Direct To Film Technology
DTF (Direct To Film) printing is a revolutionary printing method that transfers full-color designs onto fabric using a special film and heat press. Unlike traditional methods, DTF works on virtually any fabric type—cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, and more—making it the most versatile printing technology available today.
How Does DTF Printing Work?
1Design Printing
Your design is printed onto a special PET film using water-based CMYK inks. This allows for vibrant, full-color graphics with photo-quality detail.
2Powder Application
A hot-melt adhesive powder is applied to the wet ink, creating a bonding layer that will adhere the design to the fabric.
3Heat Curing
The film is heated to cure the powder adhesive, creating a transfer-ready print with exceptional durability.
4Heat Press Transfer
The film is heat-pressed onto your garment at the perfect temperature and pressure. Once cooled, the film is peeled away, leaving only the vibrant design.
Benefits of DTF Printing
✓ Works on Any Fabric
DTF printing works on virtually every fabric type, including cotton, polyester, nylon, blended fabrics, leather, denim, and canvas. Unlike DTG printing which is limited to 100% cotton for best results, DTF transfers bond equally well to synthetic and natural fibres. This makes it the go-to choice when you need consistent branding across different garment types — the same logo on cotton tees, polyester polos, and nylon jackets, all with identical vibrancy and durability.
✓ Vibrant Full Color
DTF uses CMYK plus white ink to deliver photo-quality prints with unlimited colours at no additional cost per colour. Screen printing charges for each colour in a design, making complex multi-colour artwork expensive. With DTF, a full-colour photograph costs the same as a single-colour logo. The white ink underbase ensures colours appear vibrant and true even on black and dark-coloured garments, eliminating the fabric colour limitations that affect other printing methods.
✓ Soft, Flexible Feel
Modern DTF prints are remarkably thin and flexible compared to older heat transfer methods. The print moves and stretches with the fabric rather than sitting stiffly on top, producing a soft hand feel that customers notice immediately. There is no thick, plasticky or rubbery texture like budget vinyl or low-quality heat transfers. After several washes, DTF prints become even softer as they fully integrate with the garment fibres, making them virtually indistinguishable from the fabric itself.
✓ Extremely Durable
DTF prints withstand 50 or more machine washes without cracking, fading, or peeling when properly cared for. The TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) adhesive creates a strong, flexible bond that stretches with the fabric during wear and washing. This durability is comparable to professional screen printing and significantly exceeds heat transfer vinyl. DTF prints also resist UV exposure, making them suitable for outdoor apparel and signage applications that see direct sunlight.
✓ No Minimums
DTF printing requires no screens, plates, or expensive setup, which means there is no minimum order quantity. You can profitably print a single custom item or thousands of identical pieces. This is a significant advantage over screen printing, which typically requires minimum orders of 24 to 50 pieces to justify the screen setup costs. For small businesses testing new designs, individuals wanting personalized gifts, or e-commerce brands running print-on-demand, DTF eliminates the financial risk of minimum order requirements.
✓ Fast Turnaround
Without the screen preparation, colour separation, and multi-pass setup that screen printing requires, DTF production can begin immediately after design approval. Most DTF orders are completed within 3 to 5 business days from approval to shipping, compared to 7 to 14 business days for typical screen printing. This faster turnaround makes DTF ideal for time-sensitive projects like last-minute event merchandise, rush corporate orders, and same-week fulfillment for e-commerce businesses.
DTF vs Other Printing Methods
| Method | Fabric Types | Color Detail | Feel | Durability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DTF | All fabrics | Excellent | Soft & thin | Excellent |
| Screen Print | Most fabrics | Good (limited) | Can be thick | Excellent |
| Vinyl/HTV | Most fabrics | Limited colors | Thick & stiff | Good |
| DTG | Cotton only | Excellent | Very soft | Moderate |

How to Care for DTF Prints
Proper care extends the life of DTF printed garments to 50 or more washes. The key is protecting the adhesive bond between the print and the fabric during washing and drying. Following these care guidelines ensures your custom prints stay vibrant, flexible, and crack-free for years of regular wear. Wait at least 24 hours after receiving your garment before the first wash to allow the adhesive to fully cure.
- ✓Turn garment inside out before washing to protect the print surface from friction with other garments and the washing machine drum
- ✓Wash in cold water (30°C max) with a mild, liquid detergent — avoid powder detergents which can be abrasive
- ✓Tumble dry on low heat or hang dry for best results — high heat can stress the adhesive bond over many wash cycles
- ✓Avoid bleach, fabric softener, and harsh chemicals — these can break down the TPU adhesive layer that bonds the print to the fabric
- ✓Iron inside out only — never iron directly on the print, as direct heat above 160°C can damage the transfer
- ✓Avoid dry cleaning — the solvents used in dry cleaning can degrade the adhesive bond and shorten print life

Frequently Asked Questions
Is DTF printing better than screen printing?
DTF is better for small to medium runs, complex designs, and mixed fabric types. Screen printing is more cost-effective for large bulk orders (100+) with simple designs. For most custom projects, DTF offers superior versatility and quality.
How long do DTF prints last?
With proper care, DTF prints last 50+ washes without cracking or fading. The adhesive bond is extremely durable and withstands regular wear and washing.
Can DTF print white ink on dark fabrics?
Yes! DTF includes white ink underbase, making it perfect for dark fabrics like black t-shirts. Colors stay vibrant and opaque.
What's the difference between DTF and DTG?
DTG (Direct To Garment) prints directly onto cotton fabric, while DTF prints onto any fabric type. DTF is more versatile, durable, and works on polyester, blends, and performance fabrics that DTG cannot handle.
How much does DTF printing cost?
Pricing varies by design size, quantity, and garment type. Small prints start around $10-15 per item, with bulk discounts available. Get a quote by selecting a product and customizing your design on our website.
